Research Inquiries

How to Research using MotCP’s Online Catalog:

Our online catalog features contemporary artwork, cultural artifacts and ethnographic materials, documents, manuscripts, books, journals, photographs, maps, and audio-visual materials relating to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Cherokee Nation, and United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians.

You can use “keyword” or “advanced search.” Object ID is the first number in front of the object name, this is the number you will provide for the assistant registrar to schedule your visit.

The MotCP Archives are open by appointment, Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm. The Museum and Archives are closed on the day preceding the Thanksgiving holiday, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.

Museum members, qualified scholars, tribal members, and the public may conduct research free of charge. Please make an appointment at least two weeks in advance with Registrar Lily Huskey by emailing [email protected].

Note: If you are conducting a research project with members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, or doing research located on land belonging to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, you must submit a proposal to the cultural internal review board (CIRB). The proposal includes a questionnaire and processing fee, and must be approved by the cultural internal review committee and the Tribal Council of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. If your project is a master’s thesis, dissertation, book, article, film, media production, or any research project, these guidelines apply. If your project is a college or high school paper, some requirements may be waived.
