Volunteers Needed: Museum Education Advisory Committee

The Museum of the Cherokee People (MotCP) is establishing a committee for our new educational outreach project, Lessons Around the Fire (LAF).

The Museum Education Advisory Committee (MEAC) is looking to serve as key community advisors in supporting our mission to preserve and perpetuate the history, culture and stories of the Cherokee People. This volunteer role contributes to the development and evaluation of culturally accurate, engaging, and First Voice educational programs and resources. We will offer volunteer credit hours to go towards program requirements for undergraduates, resumes or general experience for educators, and professional development opportunities. You must be eighteen years of age to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and review educational programs and resources that teach about Cherokee history, cultural knowledge, and perspective.
  • Advise on curriculum development, school programs, and educational topics.
  • Ensure educational content aligns with community standards, meets national and state educational standards, and centers a Cherokee/EBCI perspective.
  • Attend regular committee meetings, contribute to strategic planning discussions, and provide critical feedback on materials created and sourced by MotCP.

Qualifications

  • Experience in education or sharing about Cherokee history and culture.
  • Connection to Cherokee culture and EBCI community preferred.
  • Commitment to advancing Cherokee perspectives in educational spaces.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills are important.

Time Commitment

  • This committee will meet for one year, with the option to remain on the committee for following years.
  • Once the committee is established, we will meet in-person once per month for the first quarter of the year (3 meetings), then we will meet in-person every other month for half of the year (3 meetings), then we will have a virtual or in-person final meeting during the last quarter of the year (1 meeting) to review our process and progress.
  • We ask that committee members commit to at least five of the seven meetings for this inaugural year and that they do not miss more than two consecutive meetings. If committee members cannot adhere to these requests, they may be asked to step down.
  • Each meeting is expected to last between one and two hours. Meetings for the first year will be in-person, and future meetings will have both a virtual and in-person option to attend.

Impact

  • Your contributions will help shape educational experiences that honor and elevate Cherokee stories and voices for past, present, and future generations.
